Washington Sundar: Washington Sundar, who bats at the top of the order in junior cricket, has made a mark as a specialist spinner in the shortest format of the game but he wants to open the innings for India in Test matches in the near future. The 22-year-old player from Tamil Nadu has played four Tests, one ODI and 31 T20 Internationals for India in which he has taken 32 wickets. He has also scored 312 runs with the help of three half-centuries.
A hand injury during a warm-up match in Britain in July took away Washington’s chance to play in the IPL as well as the ongoing T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. He was supposed to return purely as a batsman in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, but it is learned that he has not received the necessary clearance to resume the game due to not attaining full fitness. As per the BCCI policy, he cannot be picked for the New Zealand series without a home match.
‘It will be a matter of luck to play the role of opener’
Washington said during an event that it would be a privilege for me to play the role of an opener for the Indian Test team. He said that he expects great performances from Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja in the World Cup match against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup.
