Venkatesh Iyer on IPL Debut: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener Venkatesh Iyer made his dream debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He started his IPL career with the second phase of IPL-14 played in UAE. This batsman played an important role in taking KKR to the final. KKR may have lost the final match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), but Venkatesh Iyer scored a half-century in that match.

Venkatesh Iyer played 10 matches in IPL-14. He scored 370 runs at an average of 41.11. After dream debut in IPL, Venkatesh Iyer told ‘Indian Express’, I never thought that I would have such a journey. I would have fun even if I didn’t do well. This is my first season of IPL, I told myself that I will not look at performance, instead I will give more importance to the process which has brought me here. I had no expectation that I would score so many runs. I just wanted to enjoy.’

In the final, KKR had to chase 193 runs to win. Iyer gave a good start to the team, scoring his fourth half-century of the season. He got out after scoring 50 runs in 32 balls. Iyer expressed his disappointment over not finishing the match for his team.

Iyer said – things have changed for the family

Venkatesh Iyer said that as a set batsman, I should have gone and finished both the matches. This is the main difference between a normal player and an extraordinary player. Extraordinary players end the game. I am still thinking that I should have taken the game till the end, especially in the final. Iyer also scored a half-century against Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 2. But he was out before the last over. KKR won that match in the last over. Rahul Tripathi gave the team victory by hitting a six off R Ashwin.

Venkatesh Iyer said that things have changed for my family. There is one thing in South Indian families that they tell the boy to concentrate only on his studies. Parents need courage to decide that their child will play cricket. Now my relatives are happy, so the smile I see on my parents’ face makes me happy. IPL is over, but Venkatesh Iyer has stayed in UAE. He has been kept with Team India for the T20 World Cup.
